Recycling Plastic – Facts You Need to Know

When you yourself have heard about the Plastic Continent — the floating island of plastic twice how big Texas in the Pacific Ocean — then you know the way crucial it is to recycle plastic. Right now, only 5% of plastics worldwide are recycled. Some of this is ignorance: most of the world still simply doesn’t understand the danger plastics pose to our environment and our food chain.

But plastics themselves are complicated. Even if you want to recycle your plastics, and even in the event that you dutifully separate plastics from the rest of your household waste and put it out on the curb in its blue or green recycle bin, your plastics might still end up in the Plastic Continent. Why is this?

Different Types of Plastic

Look at the underneath side of a plastic bottle or plastic container. Inside the familiar reduce, reuse, recycle triangle (“chasing arrows”) logo is a number between one and seven. This number indicates what kind of plastic that container is made of. Some plastics are simple to recycle, but other plastics are much harder to recycle. As a result, most municipal recycling facilities only recycle the easiest plastics: plastics 1 and 2. What happens to plastics 3 through 7? At some recycling facilities, these are gathered until they’ve enough to send to a larger recycling facility that does recycle these types of plastics. But at other recycling facilities, the same thing happens to plastics 3 through 7 as what would have happened at your house if you did not have that handy recycling bin: it goes to the landfill, or the Pacific’s Plastic Continent.

Plastics no. 1 and #2

Plastic no. 1 is polyethelyne terephthalate (PET). This is the most commonly used plastic, and it’s the easiest to recycle. Your plastic soda bottle, salad dressing bottle, and cooking oil bottle are likely all made from PET. Significantly more than 2. 3 billion pounds of PET are recycled annually.

Plastic #2 is high density polyethelene (HDPE). Most milk jugs, detergent bottles, and many food containers are made from HDPE. Unfortunately, some plastics marked with a #2, such as yogurt cups, are not actually recyclable. It is because other chemicals have been included with the plastic in order to mold it into the desired shape. These additives make recycling some of these #2 items ostensibly impossible.

Plastics #1 and #2 make up 96% of all of the plastic bottles produced in the United States. None the less, 80% of plastic bottles still wind up in a landfill, despite the fact that 80% of Americans gain access to a method for recycling these bottles.

Plastic #3 through #7

The rest of the plastics make-up pretty much everything that’s not a plastic bottle. Just think of all the plastics in your home — your toothbrush, cling wrap, plastic bowls, plastic cups, drinking straws, last night’s leftovers, that almost-impossible-to-open package your new iPhone came in, your computer, your DVD cases… plastic is everywhere.

These plastics can all be categorized whilst the plastics #3 through number 7. non-e of them are specially easy to recycle, so although your recycling guy will require it from your curb, that does not necessarily mean it will become tomorrow’s soda bottle. However , by researching recycling facilities in your town, you can find places to recycle these less common plastics.

The Bottom Line When it Comes to Plastic Recycling

Plastic is much harder to recycle than other materials. Because it breaks down throughout the recycling process, it can only be recycled so often times — this is why many recyclers prefer so-called “virgin plastics”, or plastics that haven’t been recycled before because they make a much better product. That means that even although you do the best you can to recycle all your plastics, a number of them might still end up in the dump.

The clear conclusion we must draw is that even the most conscientious recycling is not enough in terms of plastics: ultimately, we have to reduce our consumption. The process of producing plastics, many plastics themselves, and the aftermath of plastic use can all be described as toxic. Nearly all manufacturing processes for the different types of plastic listed above involve some degree of toxicity, and as these plastics disintegrate in landfills or in the ocean, these toxic chemicals find their ways back into our soils, our water, our food, and our bodies.

Each junk hauling company has their particular rates and services they supply, so it is important to find out what is roofed with your junk removal. Some companies will only charge you a fee to remove the junk from your home. While other companies have, cleaning up the area where the junk was picked up.

Another factor that influences how much junk removal will cost you is simply how much stuff you need to have picked up and hauled away. While some businesses may charge a flat fee regardless of the size of force, other companies charge a fee depending on the weight or size of the load.

Some businesses will also give you a fast quote over the phone, while other programs will not give you a quote until they see the load face-to-face. Many will come to your home, assess the size and weight of the load, and then provide you with a junk removal rate.

Junk removal rates are also influenced by where you live. In a few parts of the country, it may be more expensive to have your junk removed. For instance, someone who lives in New York City will pay more than somebody who lives in a smaller city with less people.

Some companies also charge a minimum. Therefore , unless you have the bare minimum, they won’t get the items. This is why it’s important to check with the junk hauling company to see if indeed they have this requirement.

In the usa, rates can be as low as fifty dollars, to as high as a few hundred dollars. The easiest method to find out the cheapest rate in your town is to search the net and the phone book. The phone book has coupons in the back for many different items; trash pick-up might be one of them.

You will also want to ask any neighbors, friends or family if they have used a trash removal service. If they have, you are able to ask them how much it cost them and if they were satisfied with the service.

Pros and Cons of Various Roof Systems

There are numerous roof systems available in today’s market, each with various strengths and weaknesses. Below I will describe each system briefly, and then list the good qualities and cons.

Thermoplastic and PVC- Single ply, could be mechanically attached, fully adhered or ballasted.

Pros- Superior performance in ponding water situations. Very lightweight roofs, in the neighborhood of 30lbs. per 100 sq . ft. Comes in white if a cool roof is desired, or in several different colors for aesthetic concerns. Yet another plus with these roofs is that large custom made field sheets can be ordered from the factory, minimizing seams sealed by the crew on the jobsite. Resistant to ozone, algae and field seams are 3-4 times stronger than EPDM filed seams. There is also a tremendous amount of flexibility in the material. And since seams may be welded with hot air, you will find no noxious fumes to manage. Both 15 and 20 year warranties available.

Cons- Being single ply, they have been vulnerable to discarded cigarettes, sharp objects dropped on the membrane, and broken glass from bottles thrown on roof (this happens a LOT) I generally discourage customers from installing these kind of systems if the roof has a lot of foot traffic or is easily accessible to unauthorized personnel. In the past, material shrinkage was at times a severe problem on Thermoplastic and PVC roofs, but changes in composition and manufacturing has ameliorated this matter. These roofs still shrink over time, though not to the purpose of failure as before.

Bottom line- Great roofs, especially on roofs that pond water heavily, provided that the roof is generally accessible only to authorized personnel.

Asphalt Modified Bitumen- This roof is what a lot of people call a rubber roof, when it is in fact composed mainly of asphalt. It is available in 3 ft. wide rolls and is usually torched down with an open flame, though they can be applied with hot air welders in certain conditions as well.

Pros- In my opinion, the greatest strength of these roofs is how well they resist outside stresses. They handle foot traffic better than any other membrane, and are difficult to puncture, especially if they’ve a granulated surface. These roofs are so tough in fact , that most insurance companies wont even recognize hail damage as they do on other roofs (I have personally seen modified roofs positively pummeled with hail and come out completely undamaged)

Cons- The most glaring disadvantage with your systems is that there is a seam every three feet, which makes for a LOT of seams. When you yourself have a diligent crew with a competent foreman who will make certain that every seam on the roof is triple checked, you’ll probably be fine with this system. If not, you can be pretty sure you can be with leaks fairly soon, well before the warranty expires in my experience. And large ponding areas of water on these systems will degrade the material prematurely.

Bottom line- With a good, experienced crew this can be a good roof on a building that does not pond water excessively. And if you have a building with a lot of rooftop foot traffic, this is probably the only way to go.

Foam roofs- This method is applied with a sizable spray unit, spraying two liquid components (isocyanate and resin) When the liquids are mixed together, they expand 20-30 times and will stick to concrete, wood, steel & most existing roof systems, but according to the manufacturers, NOT to modified bitumen.

Pros- When complete, the roof is monolithic with no seams, fully adhered and has insulating properties.

Cons- Full disclosure, I’ve limited experience with these roofs here in NE Illinois. We don’t install them, but I have been on 9-10 buildings with this system, and all them leaked badly, in a couple of cases within months of being installed. Leaks are extremely difficult to track down and difficult to fix even when found, as repair materials do not adhere to this surface well.
